How to Save Money on Groceries in the UAE: 5 Habits Backed by Today's Prices
Grocery bills add up fast, whether you are feeding a family or shopping for one. The good news is that a few simple habits can cut your spend without changing what you eat.
Below are five practical ways to spend less, each illustrated with real prices from 26 October 2026. Prices change daily, so treat these as examples of what to look for rather than fixed deals.
1. Compare the price per kilo, not the shelf price
Two bags of rice can look similar on the shelf and still be very different value. The unit price tells you what you are really paying.
Today, Ama Basmati Rice 5kg at Viva is AED 18.99, which works out to about AED 3.80 per kg. Sinnara Basmati Rice 5kg at Carrefour is AED 29.99, or AED 6.00 per kg. Same pack size, but the Viva bag saves you AED 11.00.
Most UAE stores print the unit price on the shelf label or online listing. Make it the first number you check.
2. Don't chase the biggest discount percentage
A big red "60% off" sticker is tempting, but the discount only tells you how far the price has dropped, not whether it is the cheapest option.
Today, Sunflower Oil 1.5 Litres Pack of 2 at Viva is AED 21.50, down 60%. That is AED 7.17 per litre. Nawar Sunflower Oil 3L at Carrefour has a smaller 23% discount at AED 19.99, yet it comes to AED 6.66 per litre, so it is cheaper for the same 3 litres.
Meezan Gold Pure Sunflower Oil 4Lt at Nesto is AED 31.99, or AED 8.00 per litre. A bigger bottle and a 26% discount still make it the priciest per litre of the three today.
3. Bigger packs are not automatically better value
Buying in bulk often saves money, but not every time. Check the unit price before reaching for the largest pack.
Chicken breast shows this clearly today. Al Zaeem Tender Chicken Breast 1kg at Nesto is AED 14.99, which is AED 14.99 per kg. Tenderised Chilled Chicken Breast 400g at Viva is AED 7.99, or AED 2.00 per 100g. Tanmiah Fresh Boneless Chicken Breasts 800g at Carrefour is AED 43.49, or AED 5.44 per 100g.
So the 1kg Nesto pack is the best value per kilo, while the 800g Carrefour pack costs well over twice as much per 100g as the small Viva pack. Size alone did not decide it.
Milk works the same way. Carrefour Full Fat Fresh Milk 3.8L is AED 14.99 today (AED 3.94 per litre), while LuLu Full Cream Fresh Milk 1 Gallon at Lulu is AED 18.25. If you get through milk quickly, a large pack on offer is worth comparing.
4. Make sure you are comparing like for like
A low price can be misleading if the product is not what you actually need. Always check the pack size and description.
Today, the cheapest egg match at Carrefour is Boiled Eggs 1 Piece at AED 0.99. That is a single boiled egg, not a tray. White Eggs 30's at Viva is AED 12.30 for 30 eggs. Buying 30 of the single boiled eggs would cost AED 29.70.
This matters for basket totals too. Carrefour's full basket of AED 109.45 includes that single egg, so it is not directly comparable with a basket containing a full tray.
5. Split your shop across two stores
No single store had the best price on everything today. Carrefour was the only store with all five items, at AED 109.45, but much of that came from the AED 43.49 chicken.
Picking the cheaper items from two stores makes a real difference. Rice, eggs and the 400g chicken from Viva (AED 18.99, AED 12.30 and AED 7.99) plus oil and milk from Carrefour (AED 19.99 and AED 14.99) comes to AED 74.26, and you get a full tray of 30 eggs.
If you shop online, splitting across two apps on the same day can be easy. If you shop in person, it works best when both stores are on your usual route.
| Store | Items found | Basket total | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Carrefour | 5 of 5 | AED 109.45 | Only full basket, but the egg match is a single boiled egg |
| Viva | 4 of 5 | AED 60.78 | No fresh milk match today |
| Nesto | 2 of 5 | AED 46.98 | Sunflower oil and chicken breast only |
| Lulu | 1 of 5 | AED 18.25 | Fresh milk only |
| Kibsons | 0 of 5 | AED 0.00 | No matches today |
| Viva + Carrefour split | 5 of 5 | AED 74.26 | Rice, eggs, chicken from Viva; oil, milk from Carrefour |
Quick ways to save
- Check the price per kg or per litre on every staple before you add it to your basket.
- Treat discount percentages as a prompt to compare, not a reason to buy.
- Read the pack description carefully so a single item is not mistaken for a multipack.
- Stock up on long-life staples like rice and oil when the unit price is low, as today's offers may not last.
- Compare store prices on the day you shop, since offers change daily.
